The Festival of Outback Skies is a three night/two-day event organized by the Flinders Shire Council in Hughenden, Outback Queensland.

We are a small town with a big heart and welcome everyone with open arms. We do have limited resources when it comes to providing infrastructure and technology needs for all accessibility needs, however we aim to provide you with as much information as we can about the festival grounds and experiences to assist you in planning your trip.

We also welcome any feedback you may have for us in relation to your festival planning and experience that will assist us in improving our accessible information, assistance and facilities.

1 Flinders Discovery Centre

The Flinders Discovery Centre is the local visitor information centre as well as museum. The museum has an audio guide and contains local fossils, a life size replica of Muttaburrasarus, local history, shearing display and interactive children’s activities. The centre can easily be navigated with a mobility scooter of wheelchair accessible toilets and dogs are allowed.

Porcupine Gorge Lookout

Located 60km north of Hughenden, Porcupine Gorge Lookout offers impressive views of this canyon. There is a walkway from the carpark to the lookout which is approximately 25meters from the parking bay.

Mount Walker

Mt Walker is a 15min drive from Hughenden and is a large tabletop mountain that offers 360 degree views of the region. There are six lookouts, free BBQs and undercover picnic shelters and accessible toilets. ( will need to have an arrow on map showing direction to drive on town map which is the southern exit road) You may also be able to add this to the larger scale map to indicate it’s location.

Q Ammonite Sculpture

Large wall sculpture depicting the Muttaburrasaurus, made from junk metal scavenged from local property dumps.

A representation of an Ammonite fossil made from windmill parts.

S Prehistoric Park

Come and meet “Mutt” a life size replica of a Muttaburrasaurus along with his
friends Leanneosaur and Pterosaur created by some talented metal artists.

T Rainbow Serpent Sculpture

Learn the Yirendali story of Moonda Nurra and the legacy of her presence on the ancient landscape.

U Flinders Fish

Hundreds of washers to were joined to complete the fishes scales and adjoined to sculptured steel.

24 Federation Rotunda

Made from 20’ (6m) windmills brought in from a local property, dated 1912 and 1916. These windmills were originally used to pump water for stock. This Rotunda was a Centenary of Federation project in 2001.

25 Hughenden Post Office

The first Post Office was established in 1878 in a different location, the building of today was built in 1933. The post office has an acess ramp.

26 Hughenden Court House

Completed in 1955, the present day Courthouse houses the Police Department, Q Gap Office, Government Agencies and the Court house when court is in session.

27 Hughenden Masonic Lodge

The Masonic Lodge was formed in 1886, this building was built in 1937.

28 Wirrila Mill

This 35ft (11m) Comet mill was one of only fifteen mills manufactured. Each mill was individually numbered and this is number 11.

29 Historic Coolabah Tree

Frederick Walker and Sir William Landsborough, whilst searching for Burke and Wills, blazed this Coolabah tree. The cement surveyors’ peg sculpture is adorned with four brass plaques representing historical figures and events of the area. The Coolabah Tree has an access path.

30 Returned Soldiers’ Memorial Rotunda

Erected in 1932 by the Hughenden District Soldier’s Memorial Fund in memory of past soldiers. Once used for the Annual Anzac Day celebrations.

31 Hughenden Cemetery

Historical and modern Cemetery, graves dating back to 1883. A self-guided tour leads around 24 selected headstones describing the symbols & their meanings. This site has accessible toilets.

32 Hebrew Grave

The grave of Jeanette Tolano who was 24 at her age of death and recently married. The grave is the last remaining grave in the old cemetery which was relocated to make way for the growing town. This grave was not relocated due to religious laws of the Jewish faith.

Originally formed as a social club for the large railway workforce in Hughenden. Open every Friday night from 6-12pm, this family friendly venue has a meals, drinks and a playground with a ramp accessible entrance bathroom.

13 Hughenden Recreational Lake

Completed in 2019, the lake has been stocked with freshwater fish and Redclaw yabbies. The lake has an accessible walking trail all the way around the perimeter as well as accessible toilets, free BBQ’s and picnic areas . There is also a children’s playground and two jetties that wheelchairs and scooters can access.

14 Discovery Park

A shady little nook in the CBD with internet access and an accessible toilet.

15 Brodie St Playground

Enjoy free wifi while the kids burn off energy under the shaded playground. The playground also has accessible toilets.

16 Robert Gray Park


The coolest place to be on a hot day. Lovely, shaded area with BBQ’s, picnic tables, amenities and accessible walking trails along the riverbank. The park also has accessible toilets.

17 Flinders River

Queensland’s longest river at 840 kms which flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria. It flows year-round, you just may not see it (as the water flows underground in the dry season). When the riverbed is dry, this is a great place for fossicking for fossils, river rocks, and tumbled glass.

18 Eco Walk on Flinders

This accessible walking trail along the banks of the river is peppered with interpretive signage which explain the four bio regions of the area, and industries of our community.

19 Bully Playford Park

A great place to give your four-legged friends a rest at the dog off-leash area. There are accessible toilets at this park.

20 Hughenden Sports Complex

Boasting two pools (access ramp into pool) accessible toilets, a 24-hour gym, under cover skatepark, bike park and basketball court.

21 Apex Park

This Driver Reviver stop is equipped with cold showers, accessible toilets ,baby change room facilities and picnic areas.

22 Hughenden Showgrounds

A hub for Hughenden’s vibrant sporting community activities and events. The area is also used for overflow powered caravan sites when the caravan park reaches capacity. There are two toilets blocks withing the showgrounds that have accessible toilets and showers.

No access ramp into building but they have outdoor dining tables which are accessible.


Hughenden Showgrounds is located on Stansfield Street which is a sealed road all the way to the venue. On arrival to the showgrounds drive through the main gate and along the road until you reach the dedicated accessibility parking spots featured on the festival map.

If you require further assistance in accessing venues please contact the festival director Jennifer Tasker on 0417094501 or email tdo@flinders.qld.gov.au to arrange for a buggy to collect and transport you to your venue.

All walkways and roads within the showgrounds are flat, however the surface is dirt and as such may be a little uneven.

The Workshop spaces are on ground level with accessible entry ways, except for the wool pavilion which has a ramp to the entry.

The showgrounds has two permanent accessible toilet blocks with an additional third that is hired for the festival weekend.

We do have accessible reserved seating area at the bullride and you are able to choose your own table at the dinner under the stars. With notice we can locate your table closer to either the toilets or stage depending on your preference.

The lake has accessible parking and pathways around the whole lake. All of the toilet blocks are also accessible. There will be a reserved seating area for mobility scooters, prams and wheelchairs.


Guide dogs and companion dogs are allowed at all of the festival venues, but must remain on a leash.


Companion cards are honoured, and a free ticket will be issued to the companion, except for the dinner under the stars where the companion will be charged half price to cover their meal expenses.


A Chillout tent will be available specifically to cater for people that require some quiet space. The tent will also have water available for companion dogs


The Allen Terry Caravan Park has one accessible cabin, and the Royal Hotel has two accessible motel rooms. Powered and unpowered campsite are available at the showgrounds and if requested a spot can be reserved close to the accessible toilet and shower block.

The festival runs a shuttle bus on all three evenings which does have the capacity to load a wheelchair. The shuttle bus stops at the following locations;

The shuttle bus times will be released closer to the event date.
