Your Guide to Hughenden

Located at 37 Gray Street, Hughenden, the Flinders Discovery Centre is an accredited visitor information centre. The friendly staff at the centre can assist you in planning your itinerary while you are travelling in the region. 

The Centre is also a booking agent for REX airlinesQueensland Rail and Queensland National Parks and Wildlife. It also has an extensive range of information on many destinations.

The museum has recently expanded with new displays showcasing the regions landscapes and history. We also have some great kids activities and are dog friendly.

Discover Porcupine Gorge, the jewel in the region’s landscape crown, just a one-hour drive north of Hughenden. In stark contrast to its arid surrounds, this must-see attraction features flowing creeks, towering cliffs, and dense vegetation. Easily accessed by a sealed road, you can explore this 500-million-year-old wonder in just half a day.

The Eta Aquariid meteor shower is best viewed in the early morning hours of May 6th.

The clear, dark skies of the Outback provide the perfect canvas to spot these shooting stars. As you gaze upwards at the brilliant core of the Milky Way, keep your eyes peeled for the fleeting streaks of light. Away from city glare, every meteor sighting becomes a truly magical and unforgettable moment.

Once you reach the top of Mt Walker you will be greeted with sensational 360° views of Hughenden and surrounds from six lookout points. Named by explorer William Landsborough after Frederick Walker, Mount Walker is approximately 478 m above sea level, making it approximately 152 m above the township of Hughenden.

Located 54km south of Prairie on the Prairie-Muttaburra Road, Kooroorinya Falls Nature Reserve is located on private property and is one of the region’s best kept secrets. Tower Creek runs through the reserve, which after rain can create an impressive waterfall into a rocky gorge. After the wet season a chain of permanent billabongs remain and provides excellent fishing and swimming or relaxing by the banks with a good book. The Reserve abound with wildlife, both bird and animal and those good with a camera can get some wonderful pictures.
